Stop Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Advocacy Group Condemns Attack on Sikh Student

Vancouver, BC; March 23, 2023 – On March 17, 2023, a 21-year-old Sikh male from India studying in Kelowna, B.C., was attacked by over a dozen individuals at a bus stop. The perpetrators ripped off the victim’s Sikh turban cap, yanked his hair, and beat him for an extended period, resulting in multiple severe injuries to his body for which he continues to receive medical treatment.

The Stop Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Advocacy Group strongly condemns such a racist attack on a visible minority individual in our community. We stand in solidarity with the victim and their family, and we recognize the harm and trauma that these types of incidents cause.

As an organization committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we reject all forms of racism, bigotry, and discrimination. We believe that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, or any other aspect of their identity.

We call on our community to come together and speak out against racism and hate. We encourage anyone who has witnessed or experienced a hate crime to report it to the authorities and seek support. We also commit to providing a safe and welcoming space for everyone in our community.

We must all work together to create a society that values and celebrates diversity. Let us stand up against racism and hate in all its forms, and let us work towards a more justice and equitable future for all.
